Mariners' Cal Raleigh breaks AL record with 38 homers before the All-Star break

DETROIT — Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs in Seattle's 12-3 victory over Detroit on Friday night to move within one of Barry Bonds' 2001 major league record for homers before the All-Star break. Raleigh hit a solo homer off former teammate Tyler Holton in the eighth to tie the American League record of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013.

Mariners' cal raleigh breaks al record with 38 homers before the all-star break

Raleigh hit a solo homer off former teammate Tyler Holton in the eighth to tie the American League record of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013. '(Holton) and I are really good friends and I've caught a lot of his pitches,' said Raleigh, who was in the lineup as the designated hitter instead of at catcher. 'I don't think that helped much but I'm sure he's not very happy with me.' Raleigh hit a grand slam off Brant Hurter in the ninth. 'I didn't even know it was a record until just now,' Raleigh said. 'I don't have words for it I guess. I'm just very grateful and thankful.' Seattle has two games left in Detroit before the break. 'Cal Raleigh… this is just unbelievable,' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. 'He's already set the AL record and now he's only one short of Barry. There are two games so who knows?' Raleigh hit 10 homers in March and April, 12 in May, 11 in June and has five in July. 'This is a very boring comment but baseball is all about consistency,' Wilson said. 'This hasn't been one hot streak; he's doing this month after month. That says everything.'

Cal Raleigh has 2-homer day, reaches 38th home run this season in Mariners' win over Tigers

Cal Raleigh just can't stop hitting dingers — and making history. The Seattle Mariners catcher had another big game on Friday, hitting two home runs in the Mariners' 12-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. Raleigh's two homers marked his 37th and 38th of the season — with the second one being a grand slam in the top of the ninth. Advertisement The latest tallies bring Raleigh within one home run of a stunning record: If Raleigh gets another homer this weekend, he will tie Barry Bonds for the most homers (39) before the All-Star break. (Bonds set the record in 2001; however, his association with MLB's steroids era has put an asterisk on many of his stats.) Raleigh has been on a tear this year, already tying his previous career high for home runs despite only being halfway through the season. In addition, Raleigh is one of few high-performing switch hitters in the league, and has hit a number of extra records as a result of that. Last month, the catcher became the first switch hitter to hit 30 homers before the All-Star break. Advertisement Friday's game was Raleigh's eighth multi-home run game this season, which has him tied with Mickey Mantle for most by a switch hitter in a season (1961). Raleigh still has 68 games this season to unseat Mantle — and possibly keep going. Raleigh has been well-rewarded as a result of his home run heroics: The catcher will be participating in his first All-Star Game and his first Home Run Derby next week. Now, though, he will have two more games against the Tigers to shoot for Bonds' record — and beyond. Long-term, Raleigh will be shooting for MLB's home run title. He currently leads Aaron Judge, who is in second with 34 home runs, by four homers; Shohei Ohtani is next on the list with 31.

Giants DH rafael devers dealing with disk injury in back

San Francisco Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers is dealing with a disk injury in his lower back that has limited his production since joining his new club. Manager Bob Melvin is hopeful Devers won't require a stint on the injured list given the upcoming time off for the All-Star break. Devers has begun anti-inflammatory medication for the irritation symptoms he is experiencing and is playing through the issue. He underwent an MRI exam Thursday. 'He went on some medication feels a little bit better today. We'll see how he responds to that,' Melvin said. 'I'm glad we got the MRI done so we know what's going on.' Acquired last month from the Red Sox, Devers entered the series opener Friday against the rival Los Angeles Dodgers batting .245 with 23 strikeouts, four doubles, a home run, and six RBIs over his past 14 games dating to June 26. He was hitting .261 with 17 homers and 67 RBIs overall. The Giants took on Devers' mega contract when they traded for him June 15 to boost their offense after the slugger made it known he didn't want to play first base for Boston. But he arrived in the Bay Area insisting he would do anything asked of him to help San Francisco win. A three-time All-Star, Devers signed 313.5 million 10-year contract with the Red Sox in 2023. On Friday, he was in the lineup as DH batting third but isn't yet ready to play the field, including first base where he has been doing regular fielding work. 'He feels it mostly running probably a little bit at the plate but not as much as when he's running bases,' Melvin said. 'I think with the break hopefully (he'll be OK). I think he's been playing through it for a little bit basically since he's been here. It's the reason he's not out in the field right now.'
